A Portrait Photography Session at Bottom Bay, Barbados

Session Date: August 2024Client Name: ChinyerePhotographer: Korena DarnellePhoto Assistant: Alex CarringtonLocation: Bottom Bay, Barbados The fun part about portrait photography is the ability to do what I love and meet new people. It also allows me to find new locations to take photos. I got a last minute referral for a photo session, from another female photographer friend, Amleya Clarke. The client was from out of town and was only on the island for a few days. She came in for Kadooment Day in Barbados and wanted to have some island photos at Bottom Bay, St. Philip. The thing is, I had never been to Bottom Bay before. So like with all my photo sessions, I did a location scout. I do them a day or two before the actual session to confirm the location and conditions. In this case, it was to make sure I actually find Bottom Bay.…

Barbados Kadooment 2024

Kadooment Day is an annual Bajan event that culminates at the end of the Crop Over Festival. Held on the 1st Monday in August, it brings together festival lovers from across the globe to participate in the colour and culture of Barbados. And Kadooment 2024 did not disappoint... well, except for the late 11:00 am start. This year held a special attraction as it featured a new route for the jump starting from the Helipad in Bridgetown. With the newly rebranded PeliCan, it offered a new perspective of vibrance and landscape to the usual Kadooment Day imagery. Every year, the day showcases a wealth of beautiful women in their colourful costumes, with only a few brief highlights of the men. This year, I wanted to continue my quest of focusing on the Guys of Crop Over, the Men of Kadooment day, Kadooment Guys, or whatever project name I finally assigned,…

How to Take Photos When You’re Camera Shy

if you’re anything like me, you may not like taking photos. Have you ever asked yourself why? I know I have. Especially as a photographer, you’d think I’d love having my photos taken. But the truth is, my real comfort spot is behind the camera. Not in front. So why don’t I like taking photos? I’m generally a shy person. Or as I decide myself - an introverted extrovert. Every day is not guaranteed to be my most confident day, so I’m not always up for any bad hair days or blemishes being captured and frozen in time forever. Okay, maybe that’s a little dramatic. For some of you, it may be as simple you just don’t know what to do when the camera comes up. Or you have a ‘flaw’ you don’t want to be highlighted. Maybe you’re a bit shy about your weight being more than you’d like…

Family Photography

Family photography in Barbados is an opportunity to get the whole family together. The parents, the grandparents, the siblings and anyone else that completes the family circle. These sessions are often posed in the studio or outdoors. That said, my goal is to switch things up a bit. To encourage people to try something bold and new. Family photography should be more about being authentically you. Being candid, beautiful and genuine as you share your moments is the bedrock of the family. It's all about those everyday activities from baking cookies, doing weekend chores, changing pampers and meeting the rest of the family. Here’s why candid family photos are the ideal photos you should be taking now: 1.   Candid photos make some of the most beautiful photos No one can perfectly pose that moment when you look into your little one’s eyes and the joy just paints itself across your…
