Miami Beach Barbados Engagement Photoshoot

Couple sitting on the Miami Beach Barbados during their engagement photoshoot

This Miami Beach Barbados engagement photoshoot was one of those sessions where everything that could go wrong did – and somehow that made it even better. It was Saturday night, and I received a message on IG about my availability to do a couples photography session the coming Monday. No real details were given, but I knew I had some time on Monday morning, so I confirmed my availability.

The couple was from the UK and was staying close to Miami Beach in Oistins. Since there were only a few days to prepare, I scouted the area and saw a nice little grass patch on the cliff that would be ideal. The spot offered the opportunity to get a few different looks and end off on the beach. Joseph loved the idea, so we made a plan for 10 am. I wanted to shoot a bit earlier, but I understood that people on vacation just want to relax. My major concern was the time being so close to peak hours, when we’d get that direct sunlight.

I make the effort to always arrive a few minutes early for a shoot. To scout the location on the day, gather my thoughts, and just settle in. It’s always good to switch off my mummy cap and put on my photography one. Just kidding – the mummy cap is always on, but it was good to get out of the house and clear my thoughts.

Unfortunately, the grass was being cut on the grassy section with the cool park bench that I’d ideally wanted, so I had to pivot. Quick. Joseph was running a few minutes behind (literally three minutes), and I wanted to find a new starting area because I still wanted the walk down the beach to be the last spot.

When Things Don’t Go As Planned

Now, despite a few wardrobe malfunctions (the zip ran off the back of the dress and one of the straps broke), we got off to a great start. And yes, I’d left my trusty kit of pins and clips at home. This shoot was a solid reminder of why I should always have that kit with me! A visiting turtle watcher didn’t mind us invading his space for a bit, and everything else went off without a hitch. I just had to remind Joseph’s fiancée a few times not to bend, as we really didn’t want anything else to go wrong with the dress 🙂

It was only during the session that I found out this lovely couple had gotten engaged just a few days earlier at The Cliff Restaurant! I laughed and asked Joseph why he didn’t mention it beforehand. If I’d known it was an engagement shoot, I might have suggested somewhere like Graeme Hall Nature Sanctuary instead of the Miami Beach cliff.

But honestly, I was so glad we ended up where we did because she absolutely loved the beach. Thankfully, Joseph had the ring box with him, and we were able to recreate that special proposal moment under a frangipani tree by the cliff. It also finally made sense why he’d been confused when I’d messaged him about “the spot at the cliff”—he’d asked if I meant the Cliff in Christ Church or the one in St. James!

You know, sometimes not knowing each other can make things feel a little awkward at first. But once we get to talking and being open and honest with each other, it helps our authentic selves to shine through. And that’s the real essence of the photos. The last shots down on the beach with Joseph and his fiancée were my absolute favorites, because by that time we’d become like old friends and they were both willing to just let loose. And if I’m being honest, I felt the same way 🙂

Why Miami Beach Barbados Works for Engagement Photos

This Miami Beach Barbados engagement photoshoot gave us both a slight garden feel as well as a rugged view with the cliff in the background, along with the beautiful coastline. This variety is perfect for couples who want the beach vibe and a little something extra.

For this location on the south of the island, early morning shoots before 9 am are generally better lighting-wise and also result in fewer people being out and about on the beach or cliff. Although you may still see some turtle watchers, fishermen, or sea bathers. The beach does have bathroom facilities and there’s parking available. There’s also a food truck by the beach if you want to grab a snack after the session, and it’s walking distance from Oistins and a few shopping areas.
