Bottom Bay, Barbados, is one of my favourite locations on the island. Just like most of the hidden gems around Barbados, it gives you that peace that’s perfect for families and couples to just be comfortable and free to be their authentic selves.
It has that nice fresh breeze and clear air smell that takes you places. Or at least me.
And if you’re a visitor to the island, or a local that enjoys a good drink, there’s also the Rum Punch guy. (Next time I go, I really should ask his name.)
Meeting Geninne and Dan
It was a 9 o’clock shoot, and I was excited to finally revisit this location again. Although I wasn’t looking forward to the scratchy noise the crabs make when they’re crawling over the leaves. If you know, you know.
It’s one of those things about Bottom Bay that nobody tells you until you experience it yourself. The beach is stunning, the cave is incredible, but then you hear this scratching, rustling sound coming from the fallen leaves and you realize you’re sharing the space with about a hundred crabs. They’re harmless, just going about their day, but that noise? It stays with you. I have to remind myself every time: they’re more afraid of you than you are of them. (Not sure that’s actually true, but it helps.)
I was doing a couple shoot with Geninne and Dan. It was last minute – just a couple of days before they were getting ready to leave the island.
I was looking forward to meeting them. After having a few chats on the phone and back and forth over WhatsApp, I was ready to see them face to face.
The moment they pulled up in their hired car, Geninne started to smile, and those inhibitions I usually get from meeting someone for the first time (yes, I always get a little nervous at first face-to-face) were gone.
I quickly introduced myself and gave them a runthrough of how the session would go. I also prepared them for the walk down the steps, just so they knew exactly what they were getting themselves into.
When Strangers Become Friends
Throughout the session, we got to chatting. I got to learn a bit about how they met, with Geninne leading the charge and Dan quietly watching on and smiling occasionally.
Being an interracial couple, I had to be mindful of how the lighting was working for both of them and gave a few pointers in between shots. I also double-checked to make sure Dan had on sunblock before we got into full swing. Because I didn’t want him to be sunburned – the Barbados sun is no joke.
We explored the cave. Took a stroll on the beach and even sat on the rocks to look out at the water for a bit.

I took some time to just watch them interacting and kept the camera ready to capture the moments as they unfolded naturally.
Geninne was passionate about her work – she studies ancient civilizations and the origins of early societies. I thought it was so interesting how they were both intently observing the cave structure and the fossilized rock formations. You could see them geeking out together over it.
They were so cute.
Geninne couldn’t help staring at Dan, and I had to remind her quite a few times to let me see her face. She had me quite concerned that I’d have way too many images with just the back of her head showing!
But it was all good fun with this lovely couple, and I’m glad they chose to have me capture a bit of their time here enjoying Barbados.

Why Bottom Bay Barbados Works for Couples Photography
This session reminded me why Bottom Bay is one of my favorite spots for couple photography. The variety here is incredible – you’ve got the dramatic cliff views, the cave with its natural rock formations, the soft sand beach, and those perfect rocks for sitting and just being together.
But more than the scenery, it’s the atmosphere. There’s something about Bottom Bay that just makes people relax. Maybe it’s the seclusion, maybe it’s that fresh sea breeze, or maybe it’s knowing you have this gorgeous piece of paradise mostly to yourselves.
Whatever it is, it works.
Getting to Bottom Bay Barbados
Bottom Bay is located in St. Philip. The walk down involves quite a few steps (I always warn people about this!), but once you’re down there, it’s worth every single one.
Best Times to Shoot: Early morning is ideal – the 9 AM timing for Geninne and Dan was perfect. The light is softer, it’s cooler, and you’re likely to have more of the beach to yourselves. Late evening also works beautifully during golden hour. But as I’m growing in my photography journey, the time of day doesn’t really matter. What matters most is how we shape the available light.
What to Expect:
- The steps down (and back up – don’t forget!)
- Soft white sand and turquoise water
- A cave with fascinating rock formations
- Those crabs on the leaves (just accept it and move on)
- The Rum Punch guy (usually around on weekends)
- Peaceful, intimate atmosphere
Tips:
- Wear sunblock (seriously, Dan)
- Bring water
- Comfortable shoes for the steps and the rocks, then you can go barefoot on the beach
- Be ready for a bit of a workout going back up those steps
